1310 nm vs 1550 nm Optical Transmitters: Which One Fits Your Network?

Two Wavelengths, Two Different Jobs

Every CATV headend faces the same fork in the road: launch the signal at 1310 nm or at 1550 nm. Neither is better in the abstract, and the wrong choice rarely shows up as a dead link — it shows up as a link that works at 18 km and fails the moment you add a node 30 km out.

This guide sets out the decision points in the order that matters to a project buyer: what the link actually needs, what it costs, how long it takes to arrive, and how it behaves in a hot, humid equipment room.

The Physics That Decides the Question

Two properties of standard single-mode fiber (ITU-T G.652) settle most of it.

Property 1310 nm 1550 nm
Typical fiber attenuation ≈ 0.35 dB/km ≈ 0.20–0.25 dB/km
Chromatic dispersion (G.652) near zero ≈ 17 ps/(nm·km)
Laser / modulation directly modulated DFB is normal externally modulated (LiNbO₃) for analog CATV
Amplifiable by an EDFA no yes

Attenuation is why 1550 nm travels further. Dispersion is why 1550 nm normally needs an external modulator: a directly modulated laser is chirped, and over long fiber that chirp interacts with dispersion to degrade CSO / CTB under a full analog channel load. The last row is the one buyers forget — an EDFA amplifies only in the 1550 nm band. A 1310 nm link cannot be extended by inserting an amplifier; a 1550 nm link can.

Choose 1310 nm when…

  • A single node, or a handful, sits within roughly 20–25 km of the headend
  • There is little or no optical splitting in the path
  • The budget, not the reach, is the constraint
  • You want the fewest possible optical stages — a directly modulated 1310 nm transmitter has no external modulator and no pump laser to age

Simplicity is an advantage in the field: fewer optical stages means fewer failure points, which matters where air conditioning is unreliable.

Choose 1550 nm when…

  • Supertrunk spans of 30–40 km and beyond make the lower attenuation decisive
  • You need to feed many nodes from one headend port through a splitter cascade, with an EDFA restoring the optical budget after each split
  • Redundancy is required — 1+1 optical protection, ring topologies, dual-route feeds
  • RFoG (RF over Glass) and 1550 nm RF video overlay must share fiber with GPON / XGS-PON FTTH
  • The roadmap includes DOCSIS 3.1 / 4.0 or a 1.2 GHz HFC upgrade, where headroom at the top of the band is the whole point
  • MDU buildings and hospitality properties are fed from a shared riser

One caution: at 1550 nm, launched power has a ceiling. Above roughly +17 dBm into a single fiber, stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) starts reflecting energy back toward the laser. Ask for the SBS threshold at your linewidth — not just a headline power figure.

Question Points to 1310 nm Points to 1550 nm
Headend-to-farthest-node span under ~25 km 30 km and above
Nodes fed per headend port one or a few many, via splitters
EDFA amplification needed no yes
Protection / ring required rarely commonly
Coexisting with PON / FTTH no yes — RFoG, RF video overlay
1.2 GHz HFC / DOCSIS 3.1–4.0 roadmap not required on the roadmap
First-cost sensitivity high moderate

If the left column wins on most rows, 1310 nm is the economical answer. If any of the last four rows is a yes, 1550 nm is the one you will not have to replace in two years.

Hot, Humid, High-Ambient Sites

In Southeast Asia, the Middle East and coastal Latin America, the environmental specification often decides the outcome more than the wavelength does.

  • Confirm the operating temperature range, and whether quoted figures hold at full optical output or only derated.
  • Ask about conformal coating on the PCBs — humidity is what kills electronics slowly.
  • A 1550 nm chain adds an EDFA with a pump laser and cooling fans; in an unconditioned cabinet, dust and heat are its two enemies, so set a cleaning interval into the maintenance plan.
  • Optical receivers with AGC or MGC hold output level as the optical input drifts with temperature and ageing — useful whenever a link is designed close to its budget.

Test conditions are not optional here. A CNR figure means nothing without the channel count, OMI and optical input power at which it was measured. Insist on all three before comparing two quotations.

Cost, Lead Time and MOQ — Ask in This Order

  1. Price — a 1310 nm directly modulated transmitter is the lower-cost unit. A 1550 nm externally modulated transmitter plus EDFA is a higher system cost, but it can serve several nodes from one port, which changes the cost-per-node arithmetic in its favour.
  2. Lead time — plan around a standard-order shipping window of 3–7 working days, with longer lead times for custom configurations.
  3. MOQ and tiered pricing — 待用户补充 (HENSURE's MOQ structure and volume tiers are not yet published in this guide).
  4. OEM / ODM — panel branding, connector types and channel-plan configuration are usually the first things a distributor asks to customise.

Regional Compliance, Briefly

Certification rarely decides a wavelength, but it decides whether the unit clears customs:

  • European Union: CE marking, with EMC commonly assessed to EN 50083-2; RoHS 2 (Directive 2011/65/EU); WEEE; REACH.
  • North America: FCC Part 15 (Class A / B), UL or ETL listing, SCTE reference standards and California Proposition 65 — these are what the market requires; confirm what a supplier can actually hand over.

HENSURE holds CE marking and RoHS compliance; the Declaration of Conformity and the RoHS report are available on request.

Before You Request a Quote

  • [ ] Distance from headend to the furthest node, and fiber type
  • [ ] Number of nodes fed from each headend port
  • [ ] Splitter configuration in the path
  • [ ] Whether any span will be extended with an EDFA
  • [ ] Required CNR / CSO / CTB, with channel count and OMI
  • [ ] Ambient temperature and housing (air-conditioned room or outdoor cabinet)
  • [ ] Protection requirement (1+1, ring, single route)
  • [ ] Coexistence with PON / FTTH, and the DOCSIS roadmap

Bottom Line

Let the link length and the node count pick the wavelength, then let the environment and the commercial terms pick the model. A short single-node feed does not need 1550 nm and will not repay the extra cost; a long span or a multi-node split cannot be done properly at 1310 nm.
